What is Love?

Question: What is love?

Answer: Some say love is a feeling. Others say, love is lust and lust is love. If love is a feeling, then it would be easy to fall in and out of it. Simply because, feelings change. And if love is lust and lust is love, the inevitable is to selfishly use each other to fulfil our own desires and gratification.

Love has to be more than a feeling, and a self centred or selfish incentive. The Bible says God is love in 1 John 4 verse 8. God was manifested in the flesh and took upon Himself the consequence of sin which is death. Its nature is selfless, merciful and unconditional: caring despite maltreatment, hostility and insolence.

Thus, sentimental love or feeling orientated love is not real love at all, but a desperate thirst for an empty heart, inadvertently longing for God’s love.

Question: Is love then superficial?

Answer: No love is not something superficial, but profound. For how deep is the Father’s love for us, that He will send His only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
